Everyone is Invited to Be the Additional Haim Sisters Member.

"Do you know when you'll be speaking to Haim?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only one problem: The author likewise wants to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're not alone. Several celebrated fans have also begged for the role.

One thing is obvious a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at small eateries with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos often feature them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the greatest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage people to start a band."

Award Recognition

The band have called into home, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics track departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed resilience demanded a new sound – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international following.

However the sister act will forever be their number one focus.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still making music."
